ESD T-Shirt – Function and Wearing Comfort

ESD T-shirts for EPA areas differ from conventional workwear through the integration of conductive fibres in the fabric. These ensure uniform dissipation of electrostatic charges across the entire surface of the garment. At the same time, the materials are designed for high wearing comfort – breathable, elastic and wash-resistant at the recommended washing temperatures. ESD T-shirts should always be washed without fabric softener, as fabric softener can permanently impair the conductive properties of the fabric.

All ESD T-shirts in the ESD-PROTECT range carry the ESD warning symbol and meet the requirements of DIN EN 61340-5-1 and ANSI/ESD S20.20. After a defined number of wash cycles, a re-measurement of the surface resistance is recommended to ensure ongoing standards compliance. FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about ESD T-Shirts

Why should an ESD T-shirt not be washed with fabric softener?
Fabric softener deposits an insulating film on the textile fibres, permanently impairing the conductive properties of the ESD T-shirt. This means that standards-compliant dissipation of electrostatic charges can no longer be guaranteed. ESD T-shirts should only be washed with mild detergent without fabric softener at a maximum of 60°C.

How often does an ESD T-shirt need to be tested for its protective properties?
Per DIN EN 61340-5-1, it is recommended to test ESD T-shirts for their surface resistance after a defined number of wash cycles. As a reference value, testing after every 50 wash cycles or in the event of visible fabric damage applies. Measurement is carried out using a suitable resistance measuring device.

Can I order ESD T-shirts with a company logo?

Are there ESD T-shirts specifically for women?

Is an ESD T-shirt sufficient as ESD protective equipment on its own?
An ESD T-shirt is an important component of personal ESD protective equipment, but does not replace the overall concept of a standards-compliant EPA workstation. For complete personnel grounding, additional measures are generally required – such as ESD shoes or heel straps as well as an ESD wrist strap. The specific requirement depends on the respective EPA concept and applicable standards.

Are ESD T-shirts also suitable for cleanroom environments?
ESD T-shirts in the ESD-PROTECT range are designed for use in EPA areas in the electronics industry. For specific cleanroom requirements – such as per ISO 14644 – we recommend individual consultation, as cleanrooms may impose additional requirements regarding particle emission and material composition.
